“You held my severed skull in your blue gloved hands and closely observed it from all angles. You mounted it on a wooden plank and began taking my photographic portraits. I saw you studying my head, analysing my cheekbones and the shape of my nose.” This photograph and excerpt are from my book “At Last, I Hold Your Gaze,” in which I imagine Egyptian mummies holding and returning the archaeological gaze long arrested on them.”
